Small-scale farming is changing the world.

“The future of agriculture will come from people, not simply technology. From a common understanding that the food we eat should be grown with care by and for people who care”

For over twenty years, I've been using my farming, writing, teaching and public speaking to demonstrate and exemplify how small ecological farms can disrupt the current globalized food system and provide an alternative.

The next decade will revolutionize how we relate to food, the environment and each other, and I am passionate about doing my part in this transition.

Through The Market Gardener Insitute, Ferme des Quatre-Temps, and the Growing Change Program, I work towards empowering the next generation of growers to start their own successful small ecological farms worldwide.

I'm also actively involved in different entrepreneurial startups, companies like Growers & Co and Heirloom that share the objective of pushing for food system change. Recently I migrated my operations to a new farm-to-table restaurant and market garden space; the Old Mill. Come and visit me there 😉

Transformative social change is community-driven and is guided by the everyday, conscious choices that we make – including the way we grow and buy our food.
— Jean-Martin Fortier

I farm because I strongly believe in nature and the power of community. Born and raised in Quebec, Canada. I started my farming journey in my early twenties, after WWOOFing, along with my wife Maude-Helene Desroches.

For over 20 years, we have developed and tested a biointensive growing method on our microfarm, Les Jardins de la Grelinette, that increases the soil’s biology and works with nature to achieve maximum yields on small surfaces. Given the farm’s success, I decided to share the results of all these years of research, testing and development with others to support the multiplication of regenerative microfarms and thus promote a global transition towards food systems based in nature and community.

Through my award-winning book, The Market Gardener, my online training program, The Market Gardener’s Masterclass, and an active global community, I help small-scale growers develop their farming skills.

Because I believe consumers play an essential role in building a healthy future for people and the planet, I also founded Growers & Co. The brand specializes in crafting functional workwear and high-quality gardening tools designed by and for professional growers. With the Growing Change Initiative, each purchase empowers a starting Farmer.

Still based in Quebec, Canada, I work at Ferme des Quatre-Temps, researching while training new cohorts of young farmers that acquire the experience, know-how, and resources they need to become tomorrow’s farm leaders. This important work was documented in the television series Les Fermiers (The Farmers), broadcast for 2 seasons on TV5 Monde.

Since 2021, I am a proud ambassador for Rodale Institute and an advisory board member of The Real Organic Project. It is also with great honour that I recently received a Meritorious Service Cross (Civil Division) from the Governor General of Canada for my work in organic farming and the development of regenerative agriculture.
